We Called 59 HVAC Shops During Business Hours. 64% Went to Voicemail.

We ran an experiment this week. We took 59 HVAC companies with verified business phone numbers -- real shops, numbers pulled from their own Google Business listings across Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina -- and called each one exactly once, during business hours, on June weekdays. One call per shop. No message, no robocall, no sales pitch. Just what any homeowner does: dial and wait.

The results: 38 of 59 calls -- 64% -- went to voicemail. Four shops (7%) answered with a human being. Four rang out with no answer at all, and 13 we could not classify cleanly (our answering-machine detection is imperfect, so we count those separately rather than guessing).

June. Peak AC season. The single month when every inbound ring is most likely to be a same-day, full-price repair job -- and roughly two out of three shops we called were unreachable the way a customer experiences it.

To be fair about the method: one call per shop on one day proves nothing about any individual business. Any shop that missed us might answer the next ten calls. But a homeowner with a dead AC does not give a shop ten calls. They give it about 25 seconds of ringing, and then they are back on Google, tapping the next result. The experiment measures exactly that first impression.

Some state-by-state texture: in Texas, zero of the 21 shops we called reached a human -- 15 voicemails, 6 unclassifiable. North Carolina: 11 of 13 went to voicemail. The pattern held everywhere we dialed; the differences were noise.

The part that should actually bother owners is not the miss -- it is the invisibility of the miss. A caller who hangs up without leaving a voicemail produces no evidence anywhere: no message, no log you check, nothing. The job did not feel lost because it never felt like anything. Multiply an invisible nothing across a June of afternoons and you get the quiet gap between the shops that grow and the shops wondering why the phone "slowed down."

The fix is not heroic phone discipline. You are under a house or on a roof -- that is where the money is.
